Inspired by what nature teaches, multi-media artist Joseph Russo challenges the observer to draw his own conclusion about what is real and what is imagined in a world of natural beauty and hand crafted elegance. Russo creates mind-bogglingly visceral dioramas with exquisite detail, beautifully fashioning miniature structures while depicting inner-city life, waterfront and wilderness settings, which gives the enthusiast a strong sense of pathos and depth of mood that is haunting and unforgettable. His work is a creation of intricate worlds sculpted in 1:43 scale and smaller. The pieces are constructed of drift wood and various other natural materials and weathered using acrylic paints. His sculptures give the bystander the feeling of being in a miniature wonderland. The small scale draws the viewer in, the all seeing eye, allowing for the intimacy one might feel peering into an antique dollhouse. The works distort reality through a dreamlike lens where chaos, hazards and longing lurk just beneath the delicate landscapes, harkening transformational experiences and quieter moments that resonate throughout our lives. Russo is self taught, making the transition to a full-time artist while maintaining his private practice as a psychiatrist. His work stirs the senses, suspending time itself, distilling the human experience down to single, fragile moment. His works wait to be discovered. Upcoming Exhibitions: September 9-15, 2010 Rogue Gallery, Chelsea NYC “The Dark Side of Nature”, a new and interesting One Man art exhibit appearing in the Chelsea art district of New York City, features the work of Westport psychiatrist, Dr. Joseph A. Russo. He sculpts exquisitely detailed wooden dioramas or “little worlds” depicting inner city life, waterfront and wilderness settings which give the spectator a strong sense of “pathos” that is almost “haunting”. It premieres with a wine/cheese reception on Thursday, September 9 at 6:00 pm, and ends with a closing party on Wednesday, September 15 at 6:00 pm, at The Rogue Space, located at 526 West 26th Street, Studio 9E, New York, N.Y. 10001, email: josephrussoart@gmail.com Click Advertisement to view larger Samples of Artwork: |
